BJØRNSUND– TRADITIONAL HANDCRAFT cruising

Photo

BJØRNSUND segeln is a sole proprietorship based in Greifswald.

In 2018, the sailmaker Sebastian Hentschel took over the sailing cutter BJØRNSUND. His plan is to transform the ship into a workshop and a forum for traditional seamanship.

The ship will take part in maritime events and exhibitions and visit partner towns and museum harbours in Germany and abroad. The programme will include consulting and service in all questions concerning sail-making, but also the exchange of ideas and experiences in traditional handcrafts.

Currently, BJØRNSUND is being restored on the premises of the Greifswalder Museumswerft (museum yard).
The ship is scheduled to be ready for sailing in 2023.

BJØRNSUND is also a piece of maritime culture and heritage. These special, sailing fishing cutters were called “Haikutter” (shark cutters) in Denmark and have a long tradition in fishing. Since the 1980s, these ships are also used in tourism. They still stand apart with their beautiful lines and the very good sailing characteristics.
