Restauration

As the restoration of the BJØRNSUND began after purchasing her in 2018, this much is becoming clear very quickly: Despite continuous maintenance, time has left its mark on the 90-yer old hull. Especially so in the region around the concrete ballast, where frames and planks have suffered most. The aft part of the hull has sagged down and both stem and sternpost have to be replaced in parts.

Since then, the ship has been completely gutted, the rig taken down, the engine removed and the concrete ballast taken out. About two thirds of all frames and around 300 metres of planking have been renewed, both bilge ceilings replaced. The keel has received a new sand screed. The stem post and some detailing are new in places. The deck and all beams have been removed and completely replaced.

In the meantime, the gunwale and sheer rail have been repaired. The first details of the rig are now being worked on. The diesel tanks are in place and the engine is running. Thoughts are already on the first ideas for the interior. The deck prisms have been ordered and the plans are being made for the wiring, heating and water pipes on board. And all in all, two times 140 metres of galvanised anchor chain have been put into the forepeak.

The progress of the restoration will be detailed shortly!
